This is a guest post written by Mark Perkins, Event Manager at Demijohn.
“Being married myself for 18 months (and not regretting it yet!), suddenly I find myself doing wedding shows across the UK. Not from a panicked ‘It’s happening in a month and we have no dress, no rings, no vicar… NO VENUE!’ way; I am selling our beautiful favours to couples and families who want something a little different for their wedding party.
I therefore thought I would sit back, a sizeable amount of Bramble Scotch Whisky in hand (to stop the shaking from post traumatic stress you understand!), and actually assess this ‘Wedding favour’ market I suddenly find myself in!
I mean, on what is meant to be ‘your day’, why are you buying presents for Great Uncle Phineus and Aunty Derry (or as she is know amongst family - ‘One Sherry Derry’!). Well, as my Father said… ‘The wedding is for everyone else to feel involved in a huge change of your life, the Honeymoon and the Marriage after is for you’. Closely followed by ‘Come to think of it, it’s very special, you have everyone you love in one room! That will only ever happen twice, your wedding and your …’!
One of the main things that became apparent with both planning my wedding and seeing my friends’ get married, was that to make a wedding successful, you actually need very little. In my opinion, as long as you have everyone there who means something to you, the number one thing for a wedding to be successful is just to ensure comfort of all of the guests. This was the main reason for not being allowed my pixie themed wedding on the top of the black mountains in Tipi’s, with the main budget going on Fire jugglers and acrobats… apparently ‘Grandma and grandad would not be able to get up the hill, pee in the bush or enjoy the ceremony sitting on their backsides, on rock, in the rain’… Even my reasoning - that everyone would have a skin-full of Ginger Wine for both energy to get up the mountain and warmth to brace them from the wind - was not successful.
So once we had decided to go for a venue (with a toilet) and figured how to get all the old ‘uns from the church to the meal… the stress levels went down. We had people every weekend asking if they could help. Once we had invited everyone, we had wedding presents coming in, friends cleaning the church, groomsmen organising the flowers, school pals buying the rings, uni mates pooling vehicles for a one day taxi service to and from the station, family sorting the suits…
So I kind of agree with my Dad - A wedding day is for everyone else - but the magical thing is everyone else is there for you. They are friends and family for life, but that day they are your Best Man, the proud Mother-in-law, Fun Groomsmen, Beautiful Bridesmaids and guests (Who am I kidding - who would have got Great Uncle Phineus Dancing if Derry had not downed the wine at dinner!).
That is why I bought favours, a token to try and express a fraction of the thanks you feel for actually making that day as special as a… Clynelish Single Cask Single Malt Whisky (Well, I had to get a product in somewhere on this blog!)”

Your wedding will be one of the happiest days of your life, but leading up to it can be one of the most stressful times in your life as you try to make sure everything is organised and that the day will be memorable and special for you, your family and your guests.
One of the best ways to thank your guests for helping to make your wedding day special is to give your guests Wedding Favours as a small token of your appreciation. The tradition of giving Wedding Favours to guests has been around for centuries and one of the first was known as a bonbonniere, a small trinket box.
Why not continue the tradition of treating your guests with something special from Demijohn to enhance your table place setting, while providing a memorable treat for each guest?
Creating beautiful, personalised wedding favours from Demijohn is easy :-
- 1) Choose the size and shape of your glass bottle.
- 2) Choose from one of over 60 delicious liqueurs, wines, whiskies or others spirits with which to fill your bottle.
- 3) Decide on a personalised message which we will write for free on each of your bottles.
- 4) Decide on how you would like your bottles wrapped.

If you are planning a wedding in the early months of the year, there may not be much sunshine around, it will probably be cold and there could even be snow on the ground. Counteract all of this by using opulent shades to really stand out if the weather is dull on the day. Shades of gold, burgundy, purple or green can be a better choice than pastel shades. These colours are easy to carry over into accessories for the wedding party such as headpieces, hats, fascinators, bags, cravats, waistcoats; to the venue dressing in table linens, coloured stem glassware, floral designs, table decorations, and other elements such as favours, balloons, car ribbons, cake decoration and stationery. It can give a great focus on wedding photographs to have a stronger colour that really pops, and wedding guests could take up the colour theme in different ways, with the details giving uniformity in group shots and individuality in photos with only a few people. Mothers of the bride and groom could each wear the colours in different ways, one with a jacket and one with a hat for example, and younger guests or page boys could each wear different shades of the same colour or choose a different jewel colour each for a particular accessory. Sparkling or glittery details can brighten up the dullest day and can even be incorporated into the bride’s bouquet with crystal accents or jewelled elements. Grooms can also do this with jewelled tie clips, cufflinks, fancy buttons or a crystal element in their buttonholes. See more floral designs from Funky Flower Company at the Metro Radio Arena show in Newcastle on 25th and 26th January 2014.

As the leaves change from bright green to rich shades of orange, wedding themes across the country begin to change in harmony. Excited brides and grooms opt for shades of gold, yellow, sage green, russet brown, berry red and plum for their wedding colours – colours that perfectly capture the autumnal season. It is during this magical season of change that wheat sheaves flourish.
A wheat sheaf is the perfect accompaniment to an autumnal themed wedding. They are unique, versatile and perfectly embody the idea of countryside chic. As well as looking fabulous on the day, wheat sheaves are long lasting, keeping for months and even years.
Wheat sheaves are easily customised making them great for creating bespoke table centrepieces or decorations for your wedding. If you are planning on adding your own personal touch to your wedding day, try your hand at customising your own wheat sheaf. Shropshire Petals would like to share their tips and inspirational ideas to help you on your way…
Customising your wheat sheaf is easy. All it takes is a little preparation and three simple steps:
1. Purchase as many plain wheat sheaves as you will need. If you are using these as table decorations the medium or large size would be recommended.
2. Decide which flowers or accessories you want to use in your wheat sheaf. Plan what you are going to use, if its flowers from a florist or your garden you will need to keep these in water until the big day. If you are using dried flowers such as roses or lavender you can pre-buy these in advance.
3. Keep fresh flowers in water until you are ready to use them. Depending on the flower type you may have to wrap some florists wire to the stem to be pushed into the wheat sheaf. Simply place flowers or accessories into the top, pushing the stem into the wheat sheaf until it’s secure.
Wheat sheaves are very adaptable so there’s no need to take them apart. Your flowers will easily fit in between the ears of wheat.
As they are easy to customise, wheat sheaves can be used all year round. Whether you want a special Christmas decoration or to make a springtime bouquet, there is always something to celebrate. Wheat sheaves make a treasured gift so have a go at making a bespoke for a friend or loved one as a trial for your big day by including your favourite colours or flowers and even hide a secret note in amongst the wheat.
Here are some examples of customised wheat sheaves by Shropshire Petals:
This wheat sheaf started off as a medium plain sheaf which was customised by using lavender and fresh herbs. The contrasting purple and green colours look stunning and it smells lovely too!
Using ribbon is great addition to your wheat sheaf. A berry red ribbon has been tied around the base of the wheat to give it a delicate finishing touch. Ribbon can also be wrapped around the stems of the wheat to give it a natural bouquet shape.
Using contrasting coloured flowers and greenery in a wheat sheaf such as vibrant pink, cerise and lilac with lush green foliage can create a bold, fresh decoration to look stunning on your wedding day.

Decorate the place settings with framed place cards, these can be used later to frame a small picture of the couple after the wedding, perhaps the newlyweds could enclose a photo the correct size with their thank you card for any wedding gifts
Have the favours packaged in an interesting way with colourful organza bags to tie in with your chosen colour theme, decorative boxes in interesting shapes or with guests names attached to little wrapped parcels, button badges with romantic words on could also be cute little favours
Edible favours are always welcome, small squares of chocolate with the bride and grooms names and wedding date on the wrapper, traditional bags of sugared almonds, decorated lollipops or cake pops, small pots of jam or honey, decorated iced biscuits, personalised retro sweets such as Swizzels or Love Hearts or small bags of Turkish delight
Couples who have green fingers could grow herbs or flowers in small terracotta pots and label them with the name of each guest and the date of the wedding as keepsakes; choosing fragrant herbs or bulbs would mean that their guests would have a more lasting reminder of the special day
If you like to make things or are interested in crafts there are lots of ways to personalise place settings and have them double up as favours by including the name of the guest with the date of the wedding. Small hand sewn hearts, fabric wrapped wire hearts, plywood tags with pyrography details, painted pine cones or cockle shells, hair combs for female guests and bow ties for male guests, scrabble tiles spelling the guests names on small frames or plaques and decorated clothes pegs to clip the place card to the napkins can all be completed by beginners and experienced crafters alike but if it seems like a lot of work for a larger wedding, limit the more intricate place settings to the top table and use a simpler idea for the rest of the guests.
