Recent years have seen a real trend for weddings abroad and one of the main factors is that couples want to have fantastic pictures in a great location, without the interference of the Great British Weather. One way to ensure that they get the very best results is to take the photographer with them to the wedding and we spoke to Michael from Fresh Photography who has been asked to cover several weddings outside of the UK.
“Getting married abroad in an amazing location is a fantastic idea and something I seriously considered when thinking about the best location for my wedding 6 years ago. You can usually predict the climate a little better and with the added extra of the ‘holiday feel’, your wedding abroad will be a unique and memorable occasion. I have a wedding coming up in Sorrento in Italy this June which is one of my favourite destinations anyway, so I really am looking forward to a fabulous shoot.
Having spoken to many couples who consider the idea of a destination wedding they soon realise that they don’t have to compromise on their wedding photography. For 2011/12 I am offering a Destination Photography package at the same price as a UK wedding package. The only difference is that the couple must also cover my flights, accommodation and travel costs.
I think the main reason couples have chosen to take me with them is the reassurance they get from having a professional UK based photographer who they can deal with before the wedding. They can discuss all their ideas and be absolutely sure that they have complete confidence in the standard of work and my approach. It is also reassuring for them to know that they can call in any time after the wedding to see the images and discuss ideas for a story book or a canvas etc. I will be sharing some images of the Sorrento wedding in June to illustrate the difference a professional photographer can make. “

One of the most important aspects of a wedding for lots of couples is to have a great set of pictures to look back on and remember the day. People use pictures all the time for a variety of uses and lots of them are less formal, spontaneous shots that really capture the moment and make you smile. It is tricky to translate this same feeling in to a more formal occasion such as a wedding, but the experts are on hand to give advice. We spoke to Scott Foley, an experienced wedding photojournalist based in Manchester who works with wedding clients across Cheshire, Lancashire and the North West, for his ideas on getting the best shots….
“Sometimes I am asked by clients about how they should behave on their wedding day, when around the camera. It’s a perfectly understandable question - it’s often the first time that people have worked with a professional photographer. Sometimes it will be because they have seen other wedding photographers giving instruction and asking the bride and groom to pose, or when organising formal group photos.
If you like the candid style of photojournalism and go with a photographer who works in that way, it’s important that you understand how to help create those natural images by working with your photographer. Unlike a traditional wedding photographer, who will give you a fair amount of instruction on your wedding day, a wedding photojournalist will adopt a very different approach for most of the day. Known by many alternative names, including wedding documentary or reportage, this style is more about capturing natural moments as they really happen, not creating them. So it’s important to bear that in mind on your wedding day, so the images of your special day are like those you first saw and loved in your photographer’s portfolio. The advice I give to my clients is that unless I am trying to attract your attention, ignore me. Pretend I am not there and just focus on enjoying your day.
Many photojournalists talk about working ‘at a discreet distance’ on your wedding day. What they mean is that they won’t always be in your eye-line trying to attract your attention, but instead subtly moving into the right position with the minimum fuss. You may not even notice them a lot of the time! That is as it should be. I tend to work at a closer distance than some wedding photojournalists, because being far away using a long telephoto zoom lens doesn’t help me to feel what’s going on and capture the emotion of the day. But even when your photographer is close by, it’s important to keep up the illusion that they aren’t there, because those images can be amongst the best, showing sensitive moments, the beauty of the light through your veil or a loving glance between you and your partner.
Sometimes if you feel self conscious you can worry that photos are taken from an unflattering angle. Of course if you have particular concerns, talk them over with your photographer. But ultimately you have to trust them to do their job and take images of you at just the right moment, when all the elements fall into place. A good photojournalist has to be two steps ahead of the action, observing the flow of events, always aware of light, photographic composition, relationships, the story and ensuring they are in the right place at the right time to capture the image. A good, consistent portfolio should help reassure you that they can do this.
So really, the best way to work with a wedding photojournalist is just to be yourself. Forget the camera… smile… enjoy your day!”

Your wedding day is one of the most special days of your life and choosing the right photographer for you can seem like a daunting task. It may be something you have thought long and hard about, or you may just be starting to get things organised.
Wedding photography has changed over the last few years and no longer is it a case of rigid group shots after the ceremony and then the photographer goes home. My philosophy is to provide you with a story of the day through the pictures. Natural images or the reportage style is the perfect choice when combined with other techniques and styles. Family pictures are still as important as they’ve ever been but they don’t have to be the part that everyone dreads and gets bored of. Mixing together the traditional aspects of the day with the story telling style and special moments between you both brings the whole day to life. Combining techniques from fashion, portraiture to still life and photojournalism the photographs should reflect your personalities, your day and everything you have planned for and brought together to make it so special.
Most people don’t feel natural or very comfortable having their picture taken. My approach is to make you, your family and friends as relaxed as possible and becoming more like a guest at your wedding integrating myself into the day. The trust that is put on the photographer is extremely important and I take great pride and pleasure in being asked to photograph a couple’s day.
Good luck with all of your planning.

Picking a wedding photographer can be a daunting task. It seems there are so many to choose from and so many options with packages of all kinds that you quickly get overwhelmed. Here are a few pointers that I wish I had been given when I chose a wedding photographer.
First and most importantly, find a photographer that you connect with. You only get one chance to take great wedding photos and if you don’t feel comfortable with the photographer, you will look awkward, unnatural, or reserved. To get the true emotion of your wedding day, you want a photographer that knows your REAL smile and laugh. You also want to be able to ask the photographer for their opinion and for special requests. And maybe you will create a great relationship so a few years down the road you can get great family pictures with your kids (not that that’s in the cards at the moment.)
Secondly, pick a photographer with experience. A good photographer will have taken photos of, at least, 100 weddings. Just like most things, photographers get better with time and experience. They will know what works well and what doesn’t. Make sure they use professional equipment and not just a point-and-shoot camera, even if it looks fancy.
Third, know what you want. Decide what you want the photographer to do and where you want them to be before you meet with them (take photos of the wedding ceremony, reception, wedding breakfast, the bride and groom getting ready before the wedding, formal family pictures after the ceremony, etc.) Most photographers will have packages that include some or all of the things that you want. They contain common combinations of what many brides are looking for. BUT…they are not set in stone. You can always add to them things that you want, or take things away that you don’t. If a package doesn’t include an album and you desperately want an album but don’t really care for a bridal shoot, let the photographer know. They will be happy to customize any package to suit your needs AND budget.
Fourth and finally, is a don’t. DON’T choose a photographer for what type of album they offer. Any photographer can get any type of album made. Just ask! Almost all photographers don’t make the albums themselves. They have another company make them and pass them on to you. Unfortunately, that is why they are so expensive. If you choose a photographer for the album they offer but they take horrible photos, you will just be putting those same horrible photos into your expensive keepsake, never to be looked at again because you don’t like the way your arm looks or the lighting is just not right.
Hopefully this will help you choose the right photographer for you so you’ll be able to remember the emotion and joy of your wedding day and look back fondly.

Mark Skeet is a wedding photographer and shares some tips to consider when you’re selecting the person to cover your wedding.
- Do your research – look at lots of photographers’ work – whose images speak to you?
- Meet 2 or 3 – seek to look at complete albums and galleries, most will only show their best work on the web. Consistently good results are the key.
- Do you like the presentation and design of the albums/art that the photographer shows you?
- Will you have to handle your guests’ orders or does the photographer have capability to handle this direct with those guests who wish to purchase prints?
- Who do you get on with? You will spend most of the most important day of your life around your photographer better make sure you feel you can get on with them. Whose personality gels best with yours?
- What’s your budget? The photographs are your family’s first heirloom and the only thing that remains after the wedding. You should realistically set aside a minimum of 10-15% of your total wedding budget for photography that will do your day justice.
- Do they have insurance? – all professional photographers should have public liability and professional indemnity insurance. If they use anyone to help they are legally required to have employers’ liability insurance.
