As the leaves change from bright green to rich shades of orange, wedding themes across the country begin to change in harmony. Excited brides and grooms opt for shades of gold, yellow, sage green, russet brown, berry red and plum for their wedding colours – colours that perfectly capture the autumnal season. It is during this magical season of change that wheat sheaves flourish.
A wheat sheaf is the perfect accompaniment to an autumnal themed wedding. They are unique, versatile and perfectly embody the idea of countryside chic. As well as looking fabulous on the day, wheat sheaves are long lasting, keeping for months and even years.
Wheat sheaves are easily customised making them great for creating bespoke table centrepieces or decorations for your wedding. If you are planning on adding your own personal touch to your wedding day, try your hand at customising your own wheat sheaf. Shropshire Petals would like to share their tips and inspirational ideas to help you on your way…
Customising your wheat sheaf is easy. All it takes is a little preparation and three simple steps:
1. Purchase as many plain wheat sheaves as you will need. If you are using these as table decorations the medium or large size would be recommended.
2. Decide which flowers or accessories you want to use in your wheat sheaf. Plan what you are going to use, if its flowers from a florist or your garden you will need to keep these in water until the big day. If you are using dried flowers such as roses or lavender you can pre-buy these in advance.
3. Keep fresh flowers in water until you are ready to use them. Depending on the flower type you may have to wrap some florists wire to the stem to be pushed into the wheat sheaf. Simply place flowers or accessories into the top, pushing the stem into the wheat sheaf until it’s secure.
Wheat sheaves are very adaptable so there’s no need to take them apart. Your flowers will easily fit in between the ears of wheat.
As they are easy to customise, wheat sheaves can be used all year round. Whether you want a special Christmas decoration or to make a springtime bouquet, there is always something to celebrate. Wheat sheaves make a treasured gift so have a go at making a bespoke for a friend or loved one as a trial for your big day by including your favourite colours or flowers and even hide a secret note in amongst the wheat.
Here are some examples of customised wheat sheaves by Shropshire Petals:
This wheat sheaf started off as a medium plain sheaf which was customised by using lavender and fresh herbs. The contrasting purple and green colours look stunning and it smells lovely too!
Using ribbon is great addition to your wheat sheaf. A berry red ribbon has been tied around the base of the wheat to give it a delicate finishing touch. Ribbon can also be wrapped around the stems of the wheat to give it a natural bouquet shape.
Using contrasting coloured flowers and greenery in a wheat sheaf such as vibrant pink, cerise and lilac with lush green foliage can create a bold, fresh decoration to look stunning on your wedding day.

Keeping the cost of weddings down is now easier, thanks to free-to-use wedding classifieds site, www.bride2bride.co.uk.
Bride and Groom turned website developers Sophie & John Trinick are thrilled with the popularity of their wedding classifieds site www.bride2bride.co.uk following its launch in August 2011. Less than 2 years on, and it’s now receiving over 27,000 hits a month and has over 3,000 wedding items for sale.
The idea behind the website is simple – using a short online form, brides can easily create listings for all of their wedding items for sale, from their wedding dress through to their table decorations. Brides-to-be are then able to browse through the listings featured on the website to find their dream wedding items at a fraction of the price.
What makes Bride2Bride so unique is that it is completely dedicated to weddings and completely free for brides to advertise their items for sale – they are not charged any listing fees or commissions.
As website owner Sophie Trinick explains “When planning my own wedding in the summer of 2010, I started to hunt around for a website that would easily allow me to buy & sell wedding items (and not just wedding dresses), directly from and to other Brides. I soon realised that nothing like this existed - there were generic second hand websites out there (and obviously auction sites), but I couldn’t find anything that was dedicated to weddings and free to use.”
With this idea in mind and with help from her husband John providing the technical expertise, Sophie set about making her idea a reality, and in August 2011 Bride2Bride was launched. One of the most exciting listings currently on the site is a beautiful wedding gown by one of the UK’s premier celebrity Bridal designers Caroline Castigliano.
Sophie continues “By buying second hand, brides can pay well under half the price for a designer dress that has only been worn for a matter of hours, or in some cases not worn at all. Not only does this help brides-to-be to save money, but enables just-married brides to recoup some of their wedding spend.”
John & Sophie’s aim from the very beginning was to create a free & easy-to-use resource, and with Bride2Bride they have done just that. Sophie adds “We love to think that that we are helping Brides to save money all over the country, and that their treasured wedding items are being passed from Bride to Bride!”

A rainy wedding day is the biggest fear of British brides to be, a new survey has found.
The survey by professional hair products retailer Fabriah.com gave 1000 brides-to-be a list of ten wedding nightmares and asked them to choose which one they feared most.
Bad weather - 27% Stain on the dress – 18% Car breaking down - 15% Hair disaster - 11% Flowers wilting - 8% Getting the vows wrong - 7% Best man losing the rings -7% Cake collapsing - 4% Being ill - 2% Inappropriate comments in speeches - 1%
Disastrous weather easily topped the poll with well over a quarter (27%) of respondents naming it as their main fear and completely out of their control. In second place was the fear that the wedding dress could be either torn or stained on the way to the ceremony, with 18% of women put it as their number one worry. One in eight thought the wedding car breaking down would be the biggest disaster, whereas a hair catastrophe polled fourth, scoring 11% of the vote.
Almost one in ten respondents thought that the flowers wilting would be their main nuptial nightmare making it fifth on the list. In joint sixth place were getting the vows wrong and the best man losing the rings, both scoring seven per cent.
In seventh and eighth place were the fear of the cake collapsing and the bride being ill on the big day which achieved four and two per cent of the vote respectively. Rounding up the list in ninth place with only one per cent was the concern about embarrassing speeches at the reception.
Francesca Davies from Fabriah.com commented: “Although it’s considered as lucky, bad weather has the potential to spoil a wedding. On top of that it is one of the few things a bride has no power over. I was surprised to see embarrassing speeches at the reception come so far down the list. You would have thought the mixture of new in-laws, stress from organising the day and alcohol would be a recipe for disaster. We deliberately omitted being jilted at the altar from the top ten as we thought this would completely skew the results, after all it is the ultimate wedding nightmare which every bride-to-be would choose. Fortunately, it doesn’t happen very much.”
One bride-to-be commented: “I’ve been planning my wedding for the past seven months and the thought of any of the things on this list happening doesn’t bear thinking about. Most of the stuff at weddings you can control but it is the things you have no power over like the weather and the car breaking down which really makes me nervous.”
Another said: “Obviously I would be upset if I was ill on the wedding day but I’ve been planning this for so long that I will crawl down that aisle on my hands and knees if necessary!.”

There is an exciting new company offering brides diversity and innovation in Millinery, Textiles, Fashion and Jewellery. We spoke to Kirsteen Connell, CEO at Bella Brilla, about their bespoke service for occasion accessory design and how they are supporting new talent within the industry.
“I have been in the wedding industry for 6 years and have just launched Bella Brilla, as I had been providing bespoke consultations for brides who felt they were being pushed into stereotypical directions in terms of their accessories and so they came to me for something different.
I realised that the market was slightly stagnant in terms of design and also a little naive about the changes in people’s lifestyles and how they celebrate special occasions. It was important to my clients that they could buy all their accessories under one roof, from bride to mother to guests!
Bespoke is a beautiful concept because nothing removes the ‘special’ from special occasion more than walking in and finding someone else wearing the same accessories as you (I think we have all felt this pain at some point)….however, many of my brides do not have time to sit down for multiple consultations as they have busy lives. Bella Brilla was formed as a solution to both of these problems.
We have handpicked some of the UK’s best talent who will provide diversity and innovation in the fields of millinery, fashion, textiles and jewellery. They design for Bella Brilla an exclusive collection of core designs that have the ability to be personalised online via our ‘bespoke’ button. We do not over saturate our accessory sections giving the designers a fantastic platform to sell from and providing our customers with key, on trend designs that cover a range of styles and tastes.”
