Getting married? Match your decorations to your venue

There are lots of decisions for couples to make when planning their wedding and the choices can be daunting for an occasion where even the smallest details are important. Bride-to-be journalist Deborah Bates has written this post on behalf of wedding and accessories supplier Celebrations Plus. She is planning on going all-out traditional for her upcoming wedding and plans to take inspiration from white, light and elegant décor.

Creating the atmosphere you want at your wedding can seem like a daunting prospect, but it needn’t be. Executing a certain theme or ambiance can be made much easier by matching your decor to your venue, something which is much easier than it sounds. It’s all about knowing what will work best with the space you’ve chosen, then getting down to the nitty-gritty of buying the right decorations and designing the centrepieces.

Let’s look at some examples…
Consider this - if your post-ceremony celebrations are set to take place in an old castle, think of some words you’d associate with the surroundings. Perhaps in this case, words like ‘lavish’ or ‘traditional’ would spring to mind. Use these as inspiration when searching for the perfect decorations and crafting your key features - like the centrepiece, which might feature Old English Cross designs or antique silver candelabras.

Linen napkins would complement these well, as would antique silverware. You could even add some classic china or porcelain figurines to the table decorations, which would carry the theme nicely.

What about a more rustic venue?
In recent years, the rustic theme has really taken off. Couples are choosing to celebrate in remodelled barns or village halls, which lend themselves well to a slap-up party. In this case, you can get away with going for a real party theme; mingling this with traditional, organic decor.

Why not consider creating a balloon drop from the ceiling, hanging simple bunting from the walls or basing your hand-made centrepieces on cream church candles? Keep the colour scheme natural, with soft beige, cream and pastels; hanging lace poms poms for added visual impact.

Going for an upscale space?
For some, the only imaginable place to hold a wedding is at a five-star hotel; boasting rich fabrics amongst opulent surroundings. Only sophisticated, classic decor will work in this case; think classic black and white, shining silver and sparkling diamanté. That’s not to say you can’t include some modern touches - just ensure that you keep it all simple. For table decoration, consider all-white tableware with a scattering of eye-catching crystal rocks. Drape any lights or candelabras in crystal garlands, to carry on the theme and be sure to keep the table plan simple, yet elegant.

Although you’ll probably know instinctively what’s going to work for your venue and what isn’t, you can make things a little easier on yourself by taking some pictures of your venue and making a collage; setting images of potential accessories against those of your venue. The visual comparison between the two will make it easier to identify the most suitable decorations for your space. Once you’ve done this, you should find yourself picking out decorations with ease.”
