How to sleep the night before your wedding. Image: Pinterest Getting a good night’s sleep is essential to looking and feeling your best on your wedding day. But with all those last minute worries and butterflies of excitement fluttering about - a good night’s sleep can be easier said than done. Here are our top tips to help you catch some much needed Zzzs.
1. Practise mindfulness
Feel like your head is crammed full of wedmin? No wonder you can’t switch off! “We’re bombarded with two million pieces of information every second, so learning to quiet your mind is a skill that you have to develop,” says top bridal coach Michele Paradise. Download her seven-minute ‘Mindfulness Meditation’ at soundcloud.com/michele-paradise and listen on your morning commute.
2. Get moving
Shake off the day with a post-work fitness class. “Exercise has been shown to improve sleep quality and can also help you to fall asleep faster,” says fitness guru Laura Williams. Aim for 150 minutes of exercise a week.
3. Unplug and unwind
Start charging your phone in a different room at night and resist the urge to turn
on the TV.
4. Indulge yourself
It’s easy to neglect each other in the run up to the big day, so reconnect and chill out with a bit of massage. “The human touch releases the hormone oxytocin, which helps to counteract stress hormones,” says Daphne Metland, Director of the Good Spa Guide. “Treat yourself to some aromatherapy oils – lavender and rosemary are best for relaxation.”
5. Burn bad thoughts
Negative thoughts keeping you awake? “Burn them!” says Michele. “Write down whatever it is that is bothering you and physically burn (or rip up) the piece of paper. It may sound dramatic but your mind will then be clear for you to get some much-needed rest.”
6. Still awake?
Lie flat on your back and focus on your toes. Tense them all for 30 seconds, then release. Work your way through your body in this way until you reach the top of your head. Afterwards, keep focusing on your body and your breathing rather than letting your mind wander.
With Love, UKWS x
