SIA Beauty Studios – Top Tip for bridal lips

It’s your wedding day and you want your lips to be picture and (cough) pucker perfect. Lipstick is notoriously hard to keep in place, because lips are always in motion, every laugh, nibble, kiss, smile and sip wears away more of the pigment. You will be able to count of your bridesmaid to carry your lipstick around but I’m sure you don’t want to be worrying about it through the different stages of the wedding, from the ceremony, ching ching celebratory glasses of fizz, your portrait photos and your meal.

You’re always on camera, so its important to pick the right lipstick and to prepare you lips for the big day. Here are TNEWS exhibitor’s Sia Beauty’s top tips for keeping your lipstick on.

Healthy lips

It’s so important to have you lips free from dry skin, and for them to be in good condition. I recommend putting on a good lip balm at bed time, making sure its just on the lip area something like Elizabeth Arden 8hour lip conditioner. Stay away from anything with menthol in as it will only dry your lips out more. After you shower use an old toothbrush to softly brush away any dry skin, or gently rub a washcloth over them. This will make you lips even. Start with bare lips- before starting with any product make sure you blot off with a tissue any excess oil so that there is no product on them at all.

Try a primer

Primers- there are many a lip primers on the market but many people find these very drying, and make your lips itchy and uncomfortable but you can always try trial them out to see how you feel. My favourite way to prime the lips is to brush over with the remaining foundation product from your foundation brush, and then just dab very lightly with a tissue to take the oils off.

Use lip pencil correctly

Long lasting lip pencils are good but tend to be more expensive, however any lip pencil is better than no lip pencil. I love mac long lasting lip pencils but also Maybelline have some wonderful shades which are really reasonably priced. The idea of a lip pencil isn’t to draw lips that aren’t there, I mean you can cheat a little (who doesn’t) but realistically stick with your own lip shape and if you wish, gradually build them up a little. For the liner shade I would go with a slightly lighter shade than you lipstick, the lighter pigment underneath really make your colour pop.

Pick the lipstick shade

There a many many many shades of lip stick, so its best discussing with your Make-up Artist about which shade is best for you. You will either be a cool or warm skin tone, but not only that, your lipstick and eye shadows need to come together with similar tones.

Chose a long lasting formula

Choose from shimmer, glossy, matt, to liquid and sheen. The less oil on your lipstick the longer it last. When you see bridal shows in glossy magazines with matching glossy lips, they only have to stay on for the shoot, so personally a matte lipstick that you can add a little shine over the top is best. Even if you don’t like the matte look the ingredients in the product is what’s most important.

Blot and re-apply

Apply one layer, blot and then apply another. It’s defiantly best to use a lip brush, you really get better edges with a brush than putting the lipstick straight to your lip.

Use gloss sparingly- Glossy lips look luscious, but they are low on pigment and they dilute when layered over lipstick. The key to getting a glossy looking without sacrificing longevity is to use gloss only where it’s likely to catch light, and that’s in the middle of you lip. A dot, that’s all you need! A silicon-based gloss is an alternative that produces high shine without dissolving the lipstick layer beneath!
